WAPAKONETA, Ohio (WLIO) — Early Sunday morning, treasure hunter Jamie Jones found the first gold coin in the great U.S. Treasure Hunt under stairs at Belcher Park in Wapakoneta. This is a national treasure hunt with puzzles spanning across twelve states.
Treasure hunters are encouraged to work together to find the gold coins and win the cash prizes.
"We were cracking on other puzzles and stuff and I had fallen asleep, and about three in the morning I just got a call saying 'oh my gosh we need someone out there. You're in Ohio. Can you go?' And I mean, I've never gotten really a good call at three in the morning, so I was kind of shocked out of bed like what's going on? but at the same time, I haven't found one of these coins yet. I've been so excited about it. And within the community you get to know, it's a way of everybody networking all around the U.S. So, it was almost like I had been asleep. I hadn't solved it myself, but half that solve is needing those boots on the ground," said treasure hunter Jamie Jones.
Early Sunday morning, treasure hunter Jamie Jones found the first gold coin in the great U.S. Treasure Hunt.
What makes this hunt so unique is that each of the twelve puzzles is hidden in a book of twelve short stories by author and treasure hunt creator David Steele. Shortly after the fourth Great American Treasure Hunt book was released on Sunday, four of the coins were found, including the one in Wapakoneta.
"Wapakoneta was chosen because I wanted for this hunt iconic locations that represent greatness for America. And, you know, we launched on the 250th birthday of America and so every location is going to be tied to America's greatness in some way," said author and treasure hunt creator David Steele
Those who wish to participate in the Great U.S. Treasure Hunt can find the book on Amazon.
