LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Congress has passed legislation aimed at addressing the nation's housing shortage by increasing the supply of affordable homes and reducing barriers to new construction.
The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in both the U.S. House and Senate. If enacted, it would represent one of the most significant federal housing packages approved in decades.
The legislation is designed to remove obstacles to home construction, lower housing costs and increase the nation's housing supply.
Republican U.S. Sen. Jon Husted said the measure would have a positive impact in Ohio, particularly for working families looking to purchase a home.
“It's going to help invest in a lot of startup housing, which helps working families and people begin the process of living their version of the American Dream by creating more housing supply. One of the interesting things though, as I stand here in Lima, Lima is one of the most affordable housing markets in the entire country. West Central Ohio is a great place for families to prosper. I'm confident that the President is going to sign that bill and that we're going to unleash a lot of capital to build more houses in this country,” says Sen. Jon Husted, (R) Ohio.
President Donald Trump has said he will not sign the housing bill until Congress passes the SAVE America Act, which involves voting regulations.
However, the housing bill does not necessarily require the president's signature to become law. If the president neither signs nor vetoes the legislation within 10 days while Congress remains in session, it can automatically become law.
