LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – More than 5 percent of the world’s population – or 430 million people – require some form of assistance for hearing loss, according to the World Health Organization. That number includes 34 million children.

Members of the Lima Kiwanis Club recently heard from a local audiologist about the signs of hearing loss and available treatments.

Hearing loss increases with age. Among people older than 60, more than 25 percent are affected by disabling hearing loss. Those experiencing hearing difficulties may benefit from hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other assistive devices.

“Hearing loss, if left untreated, can get worse. People’s ability to understand speech can decline over time. If you get amplification early on in the process, that decline is slowed down,” said Alexis Nadler, Doctor of Audiology.

Nadler advises anyone experiencing ringing or buzzing in their ears to schedule a diagnostic hearing test at a private audiologist office or hospital.
