LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Mercy Health - St. Rita's and Ohio State Lima continue their partnership to support students pursuing careers in healthcare.

Mercy Health recently provided a grant to the campus' biology lab, funding new equipment for students in biology classes. The upgrades include a full set of classroom pipettes, an incubator and mammal skulls, to give students more opportunities for hands-on learning. Professors say the new equipment has greatly improved both skill development and classroom efficiency.

"It makes our prep time so much easier, it makes our classroom time so much easier," said Robin Bagley, assistant professor of biology at Ohio State Lima. "We can invest time in the students and in being present in that moment, instead of having to deal with a mismatched set of things that waste time."

"The healthcare workforce shortage is real, and we know that there just aren't enough healthcare professionals in today's world to be able to treat our aging population, therefore we have to look for really creative and sometimes really diverse ways to be able to help that next generation of healthcare professionals," said Ronda Lehman, president of Mercy Health - St. Rita's.

Lehman says efforts like this, along with Mercy Health's community medicine track, are aimed at supporting the next generation of local health care professionals.
