LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Lima Salvation Army says cold temperatures and seasonal illnesses may have contributed to lower donations during its annual Red Kettle Campaign.
The campaign kicked off in early November with a fundraising goal of $130,000. By the end of the campaign on Christmas Eve, the organization raised just over $117,000. Funds from the Red Kettle Campaign support the Salvation Army’s day-to-day operations beyond the holiday season, including after-school programs and a variety of social services offered throughout the year.
Despite falling short of its overall goal, Salvation Army administrators say other holiday programs were successful. The Angel Tree and Toys for Tots programs met the needs of local families and elderly residents, but officials stress the organization’s mission extends well beyond Christmas.
Paul Downing, operations manager for the Lima Salvation Army, highlighted the ongoing services the agency provides to the community. "After School Program, student Food Pantry, which is two days a week for about 200 plus students. Of course, the social service avenue of what we do is always open, you know, Monday through Friday, and we're helping people with food, rent, utilities, so mainly food, that's our biggest one."
Downing says the Salvation Army continues to accept donations year-round at its offices across from Lima Senior High School on Bellefontaine Avenue. The organization also plans to hold its Red Kettle Christmas in July campaign at select locations to help support ongoing programs and services.
