ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - As harvest season approaches, drivers in rural areas are facing a safety issue. Tall corn fields are presenting a sight obstruction for motorists at intersections.

The height and thickness of the corn make visibility a challenge for drivers to safely maneuver through intersections and see oncoming traffic.

The Allen County Engineer's Office has been contacted by residents about solutions to this problem and how they can work with farmers to help increase visibility for drivers until the corn is harvested in the fall.

"When we hear about these issues, we'll go out and survey the intersection. And then from there, we'll identify the right-of-way lines and what we call a "sight triangle." And a sight triangle is essentially the area that's needed for a clear line of sight for an oncoming car to be able to see the intersection and then also stop if necessary. And so once those are identified, we'll remove any corn that's inside the right of way and then work with the farmer to remove any that's in that sight triangle," said Brion Rhodes, Allen County Engineer.

"A sight triangle is essentially the area that's needed for a clear line of sight for an oncoming car to be able to see the intersection and then also stop if necessary."

Two specific intersections reported to the engineer's office that are problematic are Rumbaugh and Reservoir Road and State Road intersecting with Grubb Road.
