LIMA, OH (WLIO) - How your flag should be flown during Donald Trump's inauguration has been a big topic of discussion.

Full-staff or half-staff? Local U.S. Navy veteran weighs in on flag-flying debate

The U.S. flag code says it should be lowered for 30 days to honor current or former presidents; the order from President Biden will last through Donald Trump's inauguration day.

Since the death of former President Jimmy Carter on December 29th, flags have been flown at half-staff to honor the former president. The U.S. flag code says it should be lowered for 30 days to honor current or former presidents; the order from President Biden will last through Donald Trump's inauguration day. Many state governors nationwide have ordered their citizens to raise their flags to be flown at full-staff for Trump's inauguration next Monday.

"The way it works is this. It's called the flag code; it's not a flag law. So, technically it can be reversed or changed. Mike Johnson, the speaker of the House, has actually said that during the inauguration the flags that are flying at the Capitol will be raised all the way up. They will then be brought right down afterward out of respect for former President Jimmy Carter," explained Michael Ayers, U.S. Navy veteran.

Flags that are currently lowered for former President Carter can be raised on January 28th when the 30-day period ends.
