LIMA, OH (WLIO) - With the new year arriving Tuesday night, the Lima Police Department is reminding residents to not use guns to ring in 2025.

Lima Police Department reminding people to not shoot guns into the air for the New Year's celebration

If someone fires a gun into the air there is still a risk of a bullet striking property, an animal, or even another person, causing possible injury or death.

Officers say, "What goes up must come down," meaning any bullets fired into the air will have to come back down to the ground at some point. That means if someone fires a gun into the air to celebrate the new year, there is still a risk of a bullet striking property, an animal, or even another person, causing possible injury or death. On Monday afternoon, we talked with LPD about the possible legal consequences if someone is caught shooting a gun into the air.

"You face fines, collection of your firearm, criminal prosecution, jail time, and, depending on the extent of injury, death, damage, depending on what exactly happens because of that because of the result is also a factor in all that. You're talking—you can go to prison and everything else. So it's just... you got a lot to risk for no reason," says Dylan Thiessen, patrolman, Lima Police Department.
