New car seat safety law passed in California

A new car seat law in California could make riding in a car safer for young children.

The 2017 law requires that car seats must be rear-facing until the child is two years old.  Previously car seats were required to be rear facing until the child was one year old or weighed 20 pounds, which is still the law here in Ohio.  AAA says having the seat facing the back of the car is much safer for younger children than having the seat facing the front.

"Children are actually five times safer rear-facing than they are forward-facing, so we're hoping that it comes to Ohio to get them rear-facing as well," said Lima AAA Sales Manager Cindy Nelson.  "We urge all parents to keep them rear-facing as long as possible."

Parents can take their car seats to AAA or the Lima Police Department for a free safety check.
