LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The name may have changed, but the mission remains the same.

Following the end of the National Jefferson Awards for Volunteerism last year, the family of Alberta and Richard Lee has stepped forward to ensure a local volunteer recognition program continues. On Wednesday, the family announced the launch of the first Alberta and Richard Lee Volunteer Awards, with nominations now being accepted.

New volunteer awards honor legacy of Alberta and Richard Lee

The Lee family sponsored the local Jefferson Awards for many years and said the new program is designed to carry on their parents’ lifelong commitment to public service and volunteerism. Brett Lee, the son of Alberta and Richard Lee, said continuing the awards was an easy decision.

“She was a trailblazer. My dad, boy, he plowed the way, and he was always there. So this was a no brainer. And, you know, we might have changed the name, but the mission is the same.”

Nominations for the Alberta and Richard Lee Volunteer Awards are being accepted through Friday, March 6, at 5 p.m. Nomination forms are available online at unitedwaylima.org and at limaohio.com/leeawards.
