LIMA — The University of Northwestern Ohio women’s basketball team opened its home doubleheader with a strong offensive showing, defeating Cleary 96-69 on Friday night in Lima.
The opening quarter was tightly contested, with UNOH getting on the board early as Lori Huffman slipped free off a screen for an easy basket. Brooke Asher provided an aggressive scoring presence for the Racers, attacking the rim and using her off hand to finish through contact as UNOH built a slim early edge. The freshman finished with a team-high 23 points.
Cleary was led by Marion Local graduate Samantha Hoelscher, who consistently pressured the defense by attacking the basket in both half-court sets and transition. The senior poured in a game-high 27 points for the Cougars, keeping Cleary within striking distance early.
UNOH began to separate as the game progressed, moving the ball effectively and finding open shooters. Alysia Lawson connected from beyond the arc during a key stretch, finishing with 21 points to help the Racers pull away.
UNOH’s offensive depth proved too much down the stretch, as the Racers continued to add on and secured the 96-69 win.
With the victory, UNOH improved to 11-4 on the season.
