LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Cancer survivors, caregivers, family members and supporters gathered Friday for the 32nd annual Relay for Life, continuing a decades-long tradition of raising money for cancer research and patient support.
The event brought a large crowd together to celebrate survivors, remember those lost to cancer and raise awareness and funds for the fight against the disease. This year's relay featured a superhero theme and also honored veterans and first responders for their service.
One of the event's signature moments was the survivors' victory lap, as participants wearing purple shirts circled the track in recognition of their cancer journeys.
“When I started in cancer care 46 years ago, you didn't have a lot of survivors. So, this means the world to me and so many other healthcare professionals who have worked so hard over the years, but the fact that they come back. Last year we had torrential rain and still you saw people coming back because it's important to them to know that they're not alone,” said Cheryl Nagy of the Relay for Life Committee.
Organizers said the annual event continues to provide hope and support for those affected by cancer while bringing the community together around a common cause.
Over the past 31 years, the Lima Relay for Life has raised approximately $2.6 million to support cancer research and services for those diagnosed with the disease.
