LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A local ministry dedicated to providing transportation through bicycles celebrated a decade of service by welcoming the community to an open house and blessing of the wheels event.
The Wheelhouse, a Christian Bike Cooperative, invited cyclists and community members to gather for a prayer focused on safety and joyful journeys while also highlighting the organization's mission of providing rebuilt bicycles to individuals in need of reliable transportation.
Since its founding 10 years ago, The Wheelhouse has donated more than 1,500 bicycles. Each bike is distributed with a helmet, lights and a lock to help recipients travel safely.
Volunteers play a key role in repairing and preparing donated bicycles for distribution. Organizers said the cooperative continues to meet a strong community need, with a waiting list of individuals seeking transportation assistance.
“Right now, I think we have 15 people on the waiting list, 12 to 15. Of course, this is our busy time during the summer. So, we just want to help those in the community and as long as there's a need, and we have the 20 volunteers that help us on the Monday afternoon and Tuesday and every third Saturday. As long as we have the volunteers, then we get the bikes donated from churches and individuals, we'll just keep her going.,” said Tim Heinz, manager of The Wheelhouse.
The organization relies on volunteers and bicycle donations from churches and community members to continue its work. Those interested in learning more about The Wheelhouse or volunteering to repair bicycles can find additional information on the organization's Facebook page.
