DELPHOS, Ohio (WLIO) — Delphos St. John’s is making final preparations for Friday's Division VII state semifinal matchup against Tiffin Calvert.

The Blue Jays enter the Final Four with a 19-7 record after a dominant postseason run that has seen them outscore opponents 60-4. St. John’s earned its first state tournament berth since 2011 and just the second in program history.

The Blue Jays shared the field with fellow state qualifier St. Henry for a joint practice on Monday as both Midwest Athletic Conference programs prepare for the final weekend of the season.

St. John’s will face 27-2 Tiffin Calvert at 10 a.m. Friday in Canton. Head coach Jerry Jackson said his team is embracing the opportunity and is focused on playing its brand of baseball on the state's biggest stage.

"They're up for the challenge, and you know they're kind of, they're built for this, and you can tell throughout the tournament that it's shown on the field, it's shown in the locker room, the way these guys get around and get along with each other, it's really a close-knit unit, and they believe in each other, and that's that's that's been our success so far," Jackson said.

Junior pitcher and infielder Andrew Elwer said execution will be key against a strong opponent.

"We're just gonna have to be able to put the bat on the ball, because they got a really good pitcher, and then our defenses has got to be the same as it is all year," Elwer said. "Our community is very grateful for us, they've been so supportive all year in basketball and baseball, and doing this for the community. It's just so cool to do it with this kind of group, it means a lot to me."

Senior second baseman Tyce McClain said this postseason run marks a rare multi-sport experience.

"Actually, this is my third time this year making a state appearance, so first in golf, then of course in basketball, when we won the state championship, and now in baseball," McClain said. "So it's a blessing to have three opportunities to go to state in the same year. So just looking to get the job done, get two more wins."

Jackson added that his team's experience has shown throughout the season.

"With those guys, the way they played throughout their high school career, whether it was basketball or baseball, it's showing right now on the field that they're ready for the moment, they're ready to go out and show the world what they're made of," Jackson said.
