Ohio Gubernatorial candidates square off in 1st debate

For their first debate of this election season, Ohio Gubernatorial candidates Mike DeWine and Richard Cordray squared off tonight at the University of Dayton.

But, this isn't the first time the two have been opponents in an election, Republican DeWine ousted incumbent Democrat Cordray to become the Ohio Attorney General in 2010. Former President Barack Obama has endorsed and appeared at a rally for Cordray, while President Trump has done the same for DeWine. A recent poll shows DeWine five points ahead of Cordray. Important issues discussed include health care, gun control, the economy, and E-COT.

"Under the plan that Jon Husted and I have put forward, we have to treat online education differently than we treat any other kind of education," said candidate DeWine. "By the way, it is appropriate for some parents, because of bullying or because of other reasons to make those parental decisions to do this online."

"What we need to do is flunk the failing charter schools in the state and get that money back for our public schools, so we can strengthen the classroom," candidate Cordray said. "We need to let teachers teach again in the classroom, take off all these heavy, unfunded mandates from the state legislature and let teachers do what they do best for our children."

The next debate will be on Monday, October 1st at Marietta College, with the third and final debate slated for October 8th at Cleveland State University.
