LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — As Ohioans ring in the new year, troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol want to keep the roads safe.

According to the patrol, the 2024 New Year holiday period saw two fatal crashes that killed three people. Two of those fatalities were linked to alcohol or drugs. To prevent similar tragedies, troopers will be out in full force across the state, watching for impaired and distracted drivers. The Highway Patrol says it maintains a zero-tolerance approach to dangerous driving.

OSHP increases enforcement, urges safe driving for New Year

Anyone traveling is encouraged to drive responsibly, follow traffic laws and plan ahead before celebrating. Troopers urge drivers who plan to drink to designate a sober driver or use a rideshare service to get home safely.

“Definitely focus on designating a safe driver, a sober driver. With the holidays, we do know that people are going to consume alcohol, just have a plan in place to have a designated sober driver,” said Sgt. Brandon Schreiber with the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Lima Post.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to report suspected impaired drivers by dialing #677.
