Partnership for Violence Free Families visited Elida High School throughout the week to help high schoolers with the topic of suicide.
Prevention Specialist Kaprice Pickering spoke to high schoolers during their health classes about how they play an important part in preventing suicide by being able to spot the warning signs of suicide and how they might be able to help with a three-step plan: showing that they care, asking about suicide, and getting help. Pickering says its important that students know what to do to help someone who may be suicidal before they leave for college.
"It is very important because the number of people dying by suicide between the ages of 15 and 24 is 12 people every 24 hours - so we want to get to this age ahead of them going to off to school or doing different things in their adult lives," Pickering said.
Elida High School also has an organization called "Lifeliners" that focuses on emotional issues that students face and educates students on things like mental health training.
