ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - We have had a mild fall and now that winter is arriving temperatures will get colder sending us indoors. That has health officials concerned as a variety of viruses are still causing havoc in the region.

Allen County remains at a high-risk level for the transmission of COVID-19 now at its highest peak in reported cases since August. Local hospitals are again seeing beds filled with patients dealing with the coronavirus along with an early peak of influenza cases.

"It's not just COVID that's causing the large number of hospitalizations. It's flu, it's other diseases that are now spreading in the community that we're seeing an increase in hospitalizations," stated Brandon Fischer, Allen County Health Commissioner.

Fischer says that in the last week the state saw more than 1,000 influenza hospitalizations. That is a number normally seen in February at the height of flu season. He just urges people to take precautions while visiting family and friends to limit the spread of any type of illness.
