LAKEVIEW, OH (WLIO) - Students at Indian Lake Local Schools resumed classes this past Wednesday following the deadly tornado on March 14th.
Indian Lake Local Schools were closed that Friday, Monday, and Tuesday after the EF-3 tornado ravaged the Lakeview and Russells Point communities, with school officials transforming Indian Lake High School into a community shelter and a focal point for nearby residents to obtain recovery supplies. At a press conference this past Friday, Indian Lake Superintendent Rob Underwood shared updates with the media on how the reopening process is going.
"Our kids returned on Wednesday. Thanks to a lot of the folks standing behind me, they really helped coordinate those efforts and helped with transportation, especially with several roads being closed down. We've had really good attendance. I think we had 90% of our students in attendance in the last three days. We've identified about 96 students who were completely displaced from their homes, and approximately 56 students are now living outside of the district, so we've worked tirelessly to figure out ways to get them to school, and their parents have been great, very cooperative, and so we have a good plan in place for next week to make sure even those students who are outside of our district are able to come to school," shared Rob Underwood, Superintendent, Indian Lake Local Schools.
Superintendent Underwood also added that counselors have been present in all Indian Lake buildings each day to assist with mental health.
