VAN WERT, Ohio (WLIO) — A Van Wert-based coffee business recently donated $3,000 to give area dogs and cats a place to call home.
Deaf Dog Coffee contributed the funds to the Van Wert County Humane Society to help clear their shelter before Christmas. Thanks to the donation, all adoption fees for fixed and vetted cats and dogs have been waived with an approved application. Normally, adoption fees are $100 for cats and $175 for dogs. For Deaf Dog Coffee, the donation is a way to say thank you for giving four-legged friends a chance to find a loving home.
"Our goal as a company, we donate 5% of our sales to animal rescues, shelters, adoption events really across the country, but again, we really like to stay local when we can. And that was the big goal to make sure that this $3,000 helped directly in our own community and just a way to say thank you," says Frankie Bowen, Co-Owner, Deaf Dog Coffee.
The Van Wert County Humane Society expressed extreme gratitude for the contribution, noting that their shelter is overcrowded. Currently, the shelter houses more than 20 dogs and 35 cats at its Fox Road location. The facility is a “no-kill” shelter, meaning animals are not euthanized for lack of space. Officials say the donation will help make room for new cats and dogs to become pets.
"When we run out of space, we don't take anymore cats and dogs, and people are often left wondering 'what do I do with my pet when I can't re-home it or I don't know where to take it.' By adopting a cat or a dog during this time period, not only are you giving them a home for the holidays, but you're helping us make space to help more cats and dogs," says Kirsten Barnhart, Secretary, Van Wert County Humane Society.
Those interested in adopting a dog or cat can visit the Van Wert County Humane Society at 550 Fox Road in Van Wert.
Additionally, Deaf Dog Coffee is selling Christmas blankets online. For every blanket sold, one is donated to the humane society.
