With Memorial Day next week, the unofficial start of summer is upon us — meaning more people will travel by road and air over the coming months. According to AAA, 45.1 million people nationally and 1.7 million Ohioans will travel at least 50 miles from home between May 22 and May 26 for the holiday.

AAA projects 45.1 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home over the Memorial Day holiday period* from Thursday, May 22 to Monday, May 26. This year’s domestic travel forecast is an increase of 1.4 million travelers compared to last year and sets a new Memorial Day weekend record.

In Paulding and Putnam Counties, a tornado reportedly touched down between Paulding and Oakwood with the storm progressing toward the Miller City area. According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, at least one house was damaged one mile west of Charloe, and a trained spotter reported soil being lifted into the air along State Route 613 near Oakwood. The Putnam County Sheriff's Office is currently reporting that there are no known injuries. The same storm responsible for producing the possible tornado in Paulding and Putnam Counties continued eastward into northern Hancock County where our own Meteorologist Conner Prince captured video of a possible tornado touching down in an open field north of McComb. According to an officer from the McComb Police Department, there are currently no known reports of damage in and around McComb in northwestern Hancock County.

Families, couples, and solo pilots from all over the country gathered at Auglaize County's Neil Armstrong Airport to watch today's eclipse. After landing, there was also a shuttle available to take them to the Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta. The crowd gathered on the tarmac was a good mix of first-time eclipse viewers, eclipse chasers, and astronomers.

The Glacier Hill Lakes RV Resort and several surrounding houses southeast of Wapakoneta were struck last night. Houses lost entire walls and roofs, while many trailers and RVs were blown at least several feet and flipped over. Residents report that the resort's main office is mostly gone. One woman said that she had been driving to check on family in the area when she watched the funnel cloud drop to the ground.

February 28, 2024 Press Release from ODOT: COLUMBUS – The Ohio Department of Transportation’s Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) Center recently received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly a large drone over a portion of the U.S. 33 corridor northwest of Columbus. This special permission was needed to operate an uncrewed aircraft beyond the pilot’s sight, typically referred to as beyond visual line of sight, or BVLOS, operations.

The Allen County Regional Airport invited area high schools to come out for a Career Aviation Day. Students got to learn about military aviation jobs with the Ohio National Guard to government opportunities with the FAA, and much more. Students also had the chance to sit inside an aircraft and receive demonstrations from a pilot. The Allen County Airport says they want to spark an interest at a younger age as there is a great shortage of pilots and mechanics.
