The Autumnal Equinox occurs when the sun appears to cross over the equator and occurs near the end of September. The equinox occurred at 9:30 Tuesday morning which marks the beginning of cooler temperatures, shorter days, and a sign that winter is around the corner. Some people might think of social distancing as being locked up inside the house all day. The Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District wants to remind everyone that the great outdoors is an ideal place to break out of those four walls while still keeping your distance.

Although their planned events and activities are canceled through the end of April, all of the parks in the Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District will remain open. They have over a dozen parks with more than 30 miles of trails to hike, and the Spring season is one of the most beautiful times to witness nature in.

It can be a very fun experience hiking during the day, but some may say that hiking at night is even better. Dozens of people participated in the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District's New Moon Hike at Hermon Woods. While on their hike, the moon wasn't out, but they did explore the surrounding nature and the many creatures that live there. One of which was a raccoon that they spotted while walking across a bridge. The park naturalist says hiking can be a good adventure for people who live in town and who don't get to enjoy the outdoor nature experience.
