“We just want to let people know that the facility is open and you can start coming in, and those programs all kick back in — mainly your food assistance, your rent, utilities, those things like that, which are greatly needed in the community — those are back out and open, and we’re ready to help out with that,” said Operations Manager Paul Downing.
The secure, onsite shredding event will take place Thursday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to noon in front of the agency’s office at 2423 Allentown Road, across from Walmart. The event offers residents a safe way to dispose of personal documents, check stubs, credit cards, and other paper materials that contain personal information.
The department will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday to help residents fill out their tax forms. In addition, they will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, April 14 and 15, to accommodate last-minute filers.

One in nine Americans aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s disease – that’s nearly 7 million Americans across the country and 236,200 in Ohio. Dementia not only takes a tremendous physical toll on diagnosed individuals, but the costs associated with the disease can be overwhelming and put a huge economical strain on families. Disease-related costs can jeopardize a family’s financial security, and many families and caregivers make enormous personal and financial sacrifices.
Helping athletes stay in performing condition is one of the main jobs of an athletic trainer, and Erica Anderson is one of those trainers in our area, working with UNOH athletes on site at Mercy Health St. Rita's. There are a lot of different services that Anderson and her team can bring to the table for athletes at the university.
Students at Shawnee Middle School are getting some interactive learning under their belts today. Thursday was the 6th annual STEM Day for 7th and 8th grade students at Shawnee. Students had the opportunity to visit with STEM professionals in the community and learn with hands-on interactive stations. The STEM activities ranged from pharmacy at Ohio Northern to EMS and paramedics from Rhodes State College and much more.
