With the winter months nearly upon us, it's time to start preparing for harsher conditions. Yesterday began Winter Safety Awareness Week, and everyone should make sure they have what they need to combat the unpredictable weather. Put in place an emergency plan to make sure everyone in the household is on the same page. Test your heating systems and your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure everything is in working order. And stock up on essentials in case you're stuck in your home for an extended period of time.

Many parents are getting creative to help their families stay cool during the heat wave! On Tuesday afternoon, we visited the St. Marys Splash Pad where kids were staying cool by having fun with water! As temperatures rose into the 90s for the third day in a row, the kids turned the water on, dashed and leaped through water jets, and even engaged in friendly aquatic combat. At the splash pad, we talked with one little girl about the fun she is having and other ways she is beating the early season heat.

Lima 6th Ward Councilman Derry Glenn is in urgent need of donations of air conditioners as a long-duration heat wave scorches the region. Glenn says he is currently out of air conditioners to install inside apartments and homes without proper means of effective cooling. The shortage of air conditioners comes as Glenn has received over 25 calls for help. And those calls extended as far as Wapakoneta, Delphos, and Cridersville during a stretch of temperatures well into the 90s. With the unrelenting heat, Glenn says the need is critical in order to protect health and prevent heat-related illnesses.

If it seems too good to be true it probably is, and the same applies to the weather. For perspective, our largest single snowfall on record is under 20". Any forecast showing several feet of snow for our area is more laughable than anything else. The next time you see an outlandish forecast on social media, remember to beware of the share.
