LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The weather this spring and early summer has been good news for the soybean and corn fields in the area.

Much of the local corn has hit that mark of "knee high by the 4th of July" and then some. Allen County Extension agent Nic Baumer says, depending on where you live in the county, he's heard some corn has even started to tassel. But the rain and the high temperatures in June have helped push the fields along.

"It seems like with everything this year, everything is kind of a little earlier. Definitely seeing that with the wheat harvest right now. We're usually not quite harvesting wheat right now, but obviously you can definitely see that happening a lot right now because everything is kind of happening a little earlier this year because of the warm, warm temperatures we've had," explained Nic Baumer, OSU Allen County Extension agent.

Since things are moving faster, Baumer says farmers need to watch out earlier for pests and diseases that show up during the developmental stages in the next few weeks.
