LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The City of Lima continued to review budget proposals for 2023.
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Lima City Council resumes their regular sessions Monday night as they hold their first meeting of the new year.
Saturday evening is the opening of ArtSpace/Lima's juried photography show where the photographer's work is judged to be hung in the show. There are more than 100 photos in 4 galleries from 30 photographers. ArtSpace says these are the best of the best in the region with images to catch anyone's attention.
Ohio announced another round of funding for law enforcement to get or make upgrades to body camera systems. Findlay got $91,926.81 to help start their program. The Lima Police Department got o$107,184.00 to add to the system that they are currently using. The New Bremen Police Department got $24,125.00 to upgrade their body cameras and the Putnam County Sheriff’s office got $77,636.20 to make improvements to their system. A total $4.9 million was awarded to 112 law enforcement agencies statewide from Ohio’s Body Worn Camera Grant Program.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced today that the state will award nearly $4.9 million to local law enforcement agencies across Ohio to help cover costs associated with body camera programs. A total of 112 law enforcement agencies will receive grant funding as part of the Ohio Body-Worn Camera Grant Program. Of those agencies, 44 will use funding to create new body-worn camera programs and 68 agencies will dedicate funding toward expanding or upgrading existing technology.
The State of Ohio has announced that all Department of Natural Resource Officers will now be equipped with body cameras. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine originally began the process towards outfitting wildlife and natural resource officers with body cameras in 2021 and since then the department looked for approval to use $3.5 million in federal funding from the federal coronavirus relief fund to purchase the cameras. ODNR Dir. Mary Mertz says that all officers have been well trained in the use of the body camera technology and will use them to protect the people of Ohio as well as increase trust of visitors. The rollout for the body worn cameras are expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
The chapter met with the Allen County Commissioners on Thursday and learned that a request for funding specifically for body cameras was never submitted by the Allen County Sheriff's Office, in addition, a request will have to be made to the Allen County Commissioners before any action can be taken. Ron Fails, the president of the Lima NAACP, says that they learned valuable information in this meeting, all in an effort to get more transparency from the sheriff's office.
The Lima Police Department says they are seeing vehicle break-ins increase throughout the city, but they are recently noticing increased activity on the west side of town. Areas such as Cable Road, Elijah Parkway, Tall Oaks, and Gloria Avenue are among those areas. The department says you can expect to see an increase in overnight patrols in these problem areas, but Lima residents need to do their part in preventing these crimes.
