Chaz Jackson was found guilty on at least one of his charges after his November trial. Our Eran Hami was in court for Jackson's sentencing today(12/16/19) for his role in the death of Ryan VanBuskirk. A jury heard the case just a month ago and found Chaz Jackson guilty of involuntary manslaughter with a three-year firearm specification but not guilty on a charge of murder. After deciding a couple of factors including that Jackson didn't seem remorseful, the judge sentenced Jackson to the maximum possible penalty of 14 years in prison.
It took the jury a little more than three hours to get a verdict in the case against Chaz Jackson. The jury had a few choices, they had to decide on charges of involuntary manslaughter and murder. What they decided was that Jackson was guilty of involuntary manslaughter with a firearm specification, but not guilty of murder. Before the jury got the case, the state reiterated the testimonies the jury heard, saying what police have said contradicts Jackson's alibi. It was a case with little physical evidence, but prosecutors say the testimonies and evidence back up each other.
Day two of Chaz Jackson's trial has wrapped up after both sides finished presenting their evidence. The state called a couple of witnesses that say they saw Ryan VanBuskirk get shot by Jackson. The detective on the case said their stories line up to what he learned. One of those witnesses was Rione Gray, a man already convicted in this case. He says Jackson's mom came to him two years after the shooting and paid him to sign a notarized form saying Jackson wasn't present. Gray says that was a lie and Jackson was there.
The trial for a 2016 murder case is underway in Allen County. One man has already been charged and prosecutors are seeking a conviction on another in the case.
