On October 30, 2022, David M. Wheeler of St. Marys was arrested by Celina Police on OVI charges. Before entering the booking area of the Mercer County Adult Detention Facility, an unknown white pill was found in Wheeler's possession. While taking inventory of his personal possessions during booking, Mercer County Corrections Deputies also found a rolled-up dollar bill, which tests determined to likely be methamphetamine and fentanyl. Wheeler is being charged with an additional felony for transporting drugs into a detention facility.
Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey reports that the HIT Team (Heroin Interdiction Team) conducted a detail on Tuesday (August 9, 2022). The detail focused on stopping the use and transportation of narcotics. The HIT Team is made up of members of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, Celina Police Department and Coldwater Police Department. The Grand Lake Task Force also assisted with this detail.
The 13 year old escaped shortly after 4 p.m. Monday. Officials report the individual that escaped custody is a 13-year-old bi-racial male with brown eyes and black hair. He is four foot tall and weighs 101 pounds.
The Allen County Commissioners were able to see firsthand how the Juvenile & Probate Court systems have utilized new space added to their facility. The detention part of the facility was removed a couple of years ago, and since then, that area of the courts has been vacant. The area has now been utilized with the increased workload. The holding areas and cells have been converted to offices as well as storage space for the county.
The death of 2-year-old Ezra Siegrest was ruled a homicide after an autopsy found that he died of methamphetamine intoxication. The child was found unresponsive after a 9-1-1 call and was transported to Mercer Health where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
