LIMA, OH (WLIO)-Ā It was a Monday Evening full of remembrance as Lima Police Officers honor one of their own.
Two lucky students from Wapakoneta Middle School got to see a day in the life of a police officer. The students followed around an officer from the Wapakoneta Police Department and saw the different training scenarios he goes through with his K9. A lucky assistant principal also took part in the day, helping out as the subject in one of the scenarios. K9 Rico is retiring after nine years. The officer is buying a new dog and the students wanted to help out. These two students were the lucky winners of a two-week contest that helped to raise funds for the officer's new dog.
One of the K9 deputies from the Mercer County Sheriff's Office was injured this Saturday. Franko was called to help the Celina Police Department to track a suspect in a car chase. After the chase ended near U.S. 33 and Celina-Mendon Road, the K9 and a deputy went through a cornfield when he hurt his paw. He was unable to finish the search and was treated for his injuries.
Positive Addiction Week continued Thursday with some visitors putting on a demonstration at St. Gerard. Lima Police Department K-9 units put on a presentation for the 7th and 8th grade students. The two units demonstrated the importance of their obedience and how they might conduct some tracking in the field. School employee Kelly Huffman said it's important the students know all the roles the police play in the community. She said this week is all about learning about what negative addictions look like while also seeing what positive choices the students can make.
Chalk one up for a four-legged member of the Findlay Police Department who helped nab a domestic violence suspect. 39-year-old Steven Maciejewski is behind bars, nursing a dog bite wound to his arm. Police say it all began Monday night after an alleged domestic dispute in a parking lot at 800 West Trenton Avenue in Findlay. Those involved left but were found later in a room at the Rodeway Inn Motel.
