The Ohio State University meat judging team evaluated steers, hogs, goats and sheep during the annual Kewpee Carcass Show at Keystone Meats, continuing competition for Allen County Fair junior exhibitors.
It's the last stage of judging for the Allen County Junior Fair competitors with the annual Kewpee Carcass Show. Members of the Ohio State University meat judging team in Columbus made the trip to Keystone Meats to judge the top-placing livestock at the Allen County Fair. Everything from steers, hogs, goats, and sheep was evaluated for the best quality and amount of sellable meat found in the carcass. Our Casey Mulcahy got a behind-the-scenes look at how the judges rank the carcasses and what factors into their scoring of each animal.
The Ohio State University Meat Judging Team and a few other people were on hand for the judging. The judges focused on the quality and quantity of meat from cattle, swine, sheep, goats chicken and rabbits. Unfortunately, the carcass show sponsor Kewpee wasn't able to provide their rare hot dogs this year. Video of the judging will be posted on YouTube and the Allen County Fair Facebook page.
Typically 800 people would make their way to Keystone Meats to watch the judging of the carcasses from the fair. This year, only the Ohio State University Meat Judging Team and a few other individuals were present for the judging. The judges focused on the quality and quantity of meat from cattle, swine, sheep, and goats. Rabbits and chickens were judged ahead of the show. And oftentimes those animals that do well in the show arena don't always win during the carcass show.
