Crews with Complete Demolition Services have been working for just over two months to tear down the 201,000-square-foot building. As demolition continues, materials such as concrete and metal are being separated for recycling.
The project was made possible in part through Ohio’s Brownfield Remediation Program, which provides grants to support the removal of structures containing hazardous substances. The Macy’s building met the criteria for the program, and Allen County received $1.3 million in state funding for the demolition. The project is being led by the Allen County Land Bank.
According to the records of the Allen County Recorders Office, the purchase was made last week and the property was bought for $4.5 million.
It appears the Lima Mall is about to lose another major tenant. Your News Now has heard from a few associates at Macy's who told us they have been informed of the store's Lima location closing. The employees say they were told Macy's would remain open through this upcoming holiday season and then begin the shutdown process with a March 2021 closure planned.
Macy's says it is eliminating more than 10,000 jobs and plans to move forward with 68 store closures after a disappointing holiday shopping season.
