LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Demolition is winding down at the former Macy’s department store, making way for a new Target store on the same property.

The project was made possible in part through Ohio’s Brownfield Remediation Program, which provides grants to support the removal of structures containing hazardous substances. The Macy’s building met the criteria for the program, and Allen County received $1.3 million in state funding for the demolition. The project is being led by the Allen County Land Bank.

“The big thing that I try to impress upon people is this is your tax dollar at work,” said Rachael Gilroy, Allen County Auditor and Land Bank Administrator. “That is true, but if we don't use it here, it's going to Cleveland, or it's going to Columbus or it's going to Cincinnati. So we're going to take advantage of this opportunity offered by the state and bring your money back here to work for us in Allen County.”

The owners of the Lima Mall also contributed matching funds toward the demolition effort.
