Today would have been Maleek Nelson’s 12th birthday, and families and friends came together to celebrate it with a balloon release. Years ago on Halloween, Nelson dressed up as a police officer and that caught the attention of one of the Lima police officers.
Years ago on Halloween, Maleek was insistent on dressing up as a police officer. Lima Police Chief Kevin Martin spotted Maleek trick-or-treating and wanted to take a picture with him. From there, Martin and his fellow officers formed a bond with the young boy, even naming Maleek an "Honorary Officer" by the department.
It has been two years since Maleek Nelson passed away. Regarded as having a vivacious personality and positive enthusiasm, Maleek left a strong impression with anyone he interacted with.
Family and friends of the late honorary Lima Police Officer Maleek Nelson gathered Saturday to honor him on his birthday.A balloon release celebration was held today outside the nelson home.
This was in honor of Maleek Nelson who would have been 10 years old today.In October of 2018 he passed away due to a heart condition.The family thought this was a great way to celebrate his birthday because of his love for balloons.
The Lima Exchange Club were also part of the police memorial service, handing out the 'Jack Somerville Award' for law officer of the year. The winner was announced as Lima Police officer Eric Mericle. He was honored because of his work with 7-year-old Maleek Nelson. Mericle helped Nelson fulfill his dream by making him an honorary police officer. The young boy suffered through some serious health conditions and Mericle was there for him every step of the way before he died in October. Mericle said he'll never forget Nelson's smile and how out-going he was.
On Friday night, friends, family and members of the Lima Police Department honored Maleek Nelson, on what would have been his 9th Birthday. A Balloon Release was held as "Happy Birthday" was sung while gazing to Heaven.
