The Johnny Appleseed Metro Parks District is getting a much-needed upgrade thanks to a local Eagle Scout's service project. Michael Sherrick of Troop 84 built a one-hundred-foot-long boardwalk on the nature trail behind the McElroy Environmental Education Center. Park officials, fellow scouts, and friends and family of Michael's were present for the ribbon cutting to unveil his project. The land was previously prone to flooding, which made it hard for hikers to cross without getting muddy or wet. According to Sherrick, it took him about 7 months to plan and finish the project.

Duke the sulcata tortoise with the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District turned 51 years old today and had his very own birthday party at the McElroy Environmental Education Center! The fun-filled party had little green turtle cupcakes for the humans and a special three-tier watermelon and lettuce cake just for the birthday boy, with stations to make birthday cards and paintings and to learn more about tortoises.

Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District has updated some space to better teach others about nature. The McElroy Environmental Education Center has been around since the 1980’s and has served many purposes for the park district.    But since they have recently built new office space, in the last six months they have been able to dedicate the MEEC to their educational programing.   Johnny Appleseed held an open house Sunday to show off the changes.  Thanks to Dot’s Pet Center, they have displays for their live animals, to help bring a little bit of the outdoors inside.  Plus, more space to show off some of their other educational exhibits.
