An accident at a Coldwater industrial facility lead to one person being sent to the hospital. The Coldwater Police Department says that they were called to 120 Harvest Drive in Coldwater around 10:30 Wednesday morning for an industrial accident.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is looking into the circumstances behind a fatal accident on Tuesday at Resource Recycling, located on Neubrecht Road in Lima. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, an employee was working on a conveyor around 45 feet off the ground when it was turned on. Officials say the employee fell to their death.
The City of Lima and the West Ohio Community Action Partnership (WOCAP) get the word out about removing dangerous lead from people's homes. They hosted a panel discussion called "Let's Talk Lead" to help inform the public about the different programs that are out there to help remove lead paint that can be found in homes built before 1978. Lima tests its water regularly, and there have not been any dangers of lead in the water. Officials say that's because the pipes have been lined with protective material, but there is funding available to replace lead service lines that connect homes to the public water.
The Allen County Land Bank is kicking off what could be quite a few brownfield remediation projects in the county. Members of their board came today to check out the work being done at their first Brownfield project, the demolition of the former Hofeller, Hiatt, and Clark building. It will make way for the new Allen County administration building. The state awarded them a $250,000 grant for the demolition. For brownfield projects, there are risks like asbestos or other potentially harmful chemicals that need to be removed before demolition starts.
The Lima refinery will be paying millions of dollars in penalties and upgrades for violations of the Clean Air Act. The U.S. Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency announced a settlement with Cenovus Energy to pay 19 million dollars in civil penalties for benzene and volatile organic compound emissions. The energy company must also implement an estimated 150 million dollars in capital improvements to reduce emissions of benzene by 4.3 tons per year, other hazardous air pollutants by 16 tons per year, and other volatile organic compound emissions by 219 tons per year.
The Bath Township Fire Department has a new Platoon Chief along with several new firefighters joining the department. On Monday evening inside the Bath Township Fire Station, Fire Chief Joe Kitchen swore in Brock Yingling as the department's new Platoon Chief. Yingling has been a firefighter and a paramedic with Bath Township since 2000. He also serves as the Public Safety Director at Apollo Career Center, and Yingling will be able to work with his students as their Platoon Chief.
The longest running picnic in Auglaize County returns yet for another year Friday in New Bremen! The New Bremen Firemen's Picnic kicked off Friday afternoon with the "Firemen's Memorial 5K Fun Run" along with food and beverages. Since 1921, the firemen's picnic gives a chance for the New Bremen German Township Fire Department to connect with the community they serve. While building the family atmosphere, the picnic also helps raise funds to support the fire department allowing firefighters to strengthen their equipment and services in the event a neighbor needs help.
Several local students received a close-up look at life-saving careers on Wednesday. As part of the City of Lima's GenNext program, students met with Mayor Shareeta Smith and the Lima Fire Department at the Bradfield Community Center to learn more about jobs in public safety. Students checked out a Lima fire truck and were shown how firefighters and EMTs perform life-saving tasks in emergencies.
