The State of Ohio is making some changes to the Homestead Exemption Tax that will benefit many Ohioans. The Allen County auditor released that new income thresholds have been established for seniors 65 years of age or older, disabled veterans, and spouses of first responders killed in the line of duty. The amounts adjust with inflation annually, and properties have a new market value because of the new triennial.
After a community forum held on October 29th, the Elida School Board of Education voted on whether they will move forward with a renewal tax levy. On Tuesday evening, the Elida School Board unanimously voted to move forward with the renewal levy for $2.7 million. Tuesday night's decision comes after the unofficial 5-year forecast presented at the community forum showing expenses outpacing revenues by an increasingly growing margin. October 9, 2024, Press Release from the Ohio Department of Commerce: COLUMBUS, Ohio – If you operate a bank or business in the state of Ohio, you have until Nov. 1 to report unclaimed funds to the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Unclaimed Funds – even if there are not any funds to report. Unclaimed Funds Reports are due on Nov. 1 for accounts dormant as of June 30, 2024. The only exception is for life insurance companies, whose reports are due May 1, 2025 for accounts dormant as of Dec. 31, 2024. Last year, the division received 90,790 reports and $528 million.

For over 50 years, the Lima Dana plant provided good-paying jobs to this region, and current and former employees are dealing with the announcement of its closure in 2025. President of the UAW 1765 retirees, Gary Frueh, says the Lima plant was highly regarded in the Dana Corporation, and it was the star plant in the division during the 80s and 90s. The plant also received the prestigious "Malcolm Baldrige Award" in 2000 for manufacturing.
Ohio consumers are getting ready to enjoy some shopping without worrying about the sales tax. The state's annual sales tax holiday kicks off tonight at midnight and lasts until 11:59 p.m., Thursday, August 8, 2024. This ten-day period is new for 2024 as previous years have observed the sales tax exclusion on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in August.
The Putnam County treasurer wants to remind property owners that their tax deadline is fast approaching. Taxes are due July 19th, and people can pay them at the treasurer's office in the courthouse between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Thursday or Friday. Or people can put their payment in a drop box in an alley off Hickory Street.
If you are an Allen County property owner and haven't paid your taxes, you have until tomorrow, July 12, 2024, to get it done without penalty. The second half of real estate and mobile home taxes are due Friday. While many find paying taxes annoying they are needed to keep our society moving. Levies are funded by these tax dollars for much-needed services. Services that have been passed by registered voters.
