With temperatures dropping to dangerous levels, it's important to keep your pets' safety in mind. The number one recommendation is that when it is below freezing outside, you should bring your animals indoors. Make sure your home is pet proofed. Keep potentially harmful food and liquids up and away and be sure space heaters are in a safe spot, so they don't get knocked over or burn your pet.

A dog could be a good addition to a home, but with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, you may want to wait until things calm down so you can spend more time helping them adjust to a new home. Plus, making the whole family part of the process of getting a new dog is a good way to make sure you find the right one for your home. Finding a rescue at a local shelter could be a good place to start.

October 23, 2024, Press Release from the Kiwanis Club of Lima: The sixth annual Howl'oween Trick or Trot, a 5K Run, One-mile Fun Run, and Virtual Pet Contest, will take place on Sunday, October 27 at Faurot Park and Woodlawn cemetery, on the corner of Woodlawn and North Shore Drive. The Pet Contest will be virtual on the Kiwanis Facebook Page. The One Mile Fun Run will begin at 4 PM at Faurot Park and wind through a section of the cemetery and back. The 5K will begin at 5 PM at Faurot Park and wind through the cemetery and back to the finish line at Faurot Park. Each walker or runner who finishes the course will receive a finisher medal.

Several area fire departments responded to a duplex fire in Lima Friday afternoon. At 12:17 p.m., the Lima Fire Department responded to a fire at an apartment unit inside a duplex in the 700 block of South Elizabeth Street. When firefighters arrived on the scene, a second alarm was declared. According to Lima Fire Department personnel on the scene, all people were accounted for, and the tenant was at work when the fire erupted inside the apartment. There were five cats and one dog inside the unit where the blaze broke out, and one dog in the other unit. Tragically, two cats and one dog were killed.

The Van Wert County Humane Society is preparing for an exciting day of wagging tails and hopeful hearts. Van Wert Manor is hosting an upcoming event to raise money for charities, with festivities starring local animals. This fun-filled event will be fundraising with their one-dollar tickets as an entry for a chance to win a basket of goodies. Donations will be accepted to help offset costs and assist with vet bills. It will also benefit the care and adoption efforts of animals in need.

It's time to celebrate America's independence, but our four-legged friends may find the Fourth of July stressful. Many will celebrate this week with fireworks, either at home or at a public show. Allen County Dog Warden Julie Shellhammer says dog owners should take extra precautions to make sure their pets are safe and secure because dogs often aren't big fans of fireworks and loud noises. She recommends leaving dogs at home, where they feel safe and at ease when you go out to see the fireworks.

You may have seen some posts on social media warning about the dangers of pets and the eclipse. Dr. Nathan Metz of Metz Petz says dogs and cats will not look at the sun, so their eyes will not be damaged by the event. But the one concern that he has for pets doesn't come from the sky, but from the ground as people gather to watch the once-in-a-lifetime event.
