Akers and endow the Officer Douglas T. Akers Memorial Scholarship. The event, 'Cuffs & Stuff,' is on Thursday, February 6, at the Old Mill Stream Centre, 1017 E Sandusky St, Findlay, OH 45840. An additional purpose of the event is to highlight mental health awareness and support aspiring law enforcement professionals. A significant highlight of the evening is the Master of Ceremonies, Vinnie Montez, a seasoned law enforcement officer and acclaimed stand-up comedian. Montez, a 20-plus-year veteran of Colorado law enforcement, began performing comedy in 2007 as a way to cope with the stresses of his job. Drawing from his experiences as a police officer and his Mexican heritage, Montez quickly became a comedy favorite, appearing at venues nationwide, including Denver’s Comedy Works and the Great American Comedy Festival. Montez’s comedy special, Vinnie Montez: Armed & Hilarious, debuted on Dry Bar Comedy in 2019. He has shared the stage with top comedians such as Michelle Wolf, Josh Blue, and Gilbert Gottfried. Known for his hilarious and heartfelt stories about policing and mental health, Montez uses humor to bridge gaps between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

It's official, the City of Lima will have a new police chief at the end of the month. In a press release from the city, Lima Police Chief Angel Cortes will retire on July 26th. He took the oath of office in June of 2022. He is the first Hispanic police chief in the city's history and has given 33 years of service to the city starting as a patrolman in 1991. Major Jim Baker will take the oath of office becoming the next police chief on Wednesday, July 17th. His duties as chief will begin on July 27th.
The Lima Police Department is investigating a shooting at a local park. Around noon on Friday, police responded to a report of a shooting in the parking lot at Cole Street and North Shore Drive in Faurot Park. According to the Lima Police Department, a group of family and friends had gathered at the park, and a verbal argument led to an individual pulling out a gun and shooting one person.

This year’s ceremony paid special tribute to nine Ohio law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty between 2020 and 2023 and one historical honoree. It also marked the public unveiling of a major renovation of the Fallen Officers Memorial Wall, on the grounds of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy in London. Freshly engraved with the names of 836 peace officers dating back to 1832, the 32 panels of polished black granite that form the memorial wall were recently mounted over the wall’s limestone face, preserving the legacy of Ohio’s fallen heroes for generations to come.
