Mail carriers in the Lima area are once again working to "Stamp Out Hunger." Each year, on the second Saturday of May, letter carriers across the nation collect non-perishable food donations from residents on their routes. They are asking you to put the food out by your mailbox early this Saturday, May 11th, as there will be volunteers out assisting them with the collection. The donations stay local and help families struggling with food insecurities.

Details of the Cable Road improvement project were shared Tuesday night at Lima City Council with strong opinions being expressed by councilors. According to information posted on the City of Lima's website, the proposed project for Cable Road would convert the 5-lane roadway to 3 lanes between Windsor Drive and College Park West, install a median between Latham Avenue and Windsor Drive, and construct sidewalks on both sides of the roadway extending from Latham Avenue to College Park West. At Tuesday night's city council meeting, city councilors expressed their stances both for and against the project.

The City of Lima Tax Department is extending its office hours to assist residents with their filings. They will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through April 15th. They will also be open on Saturday, April 13th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. They ask that you bring all the documents needed with you.

March 22, 2024 Press Release from the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission: BEREA, Ohio (March 22, 2024) – The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission’s new toll collection system, which started as a vision and a study in 2016, is nearing the final stages of completion. The switch to the new system – which began last year – will be phased in gradually over the next several weeks. To accommodate all travelers on the 241-mile Ohio Turnpike – designated as I-80, I-90, and I-76 – the new toll collection system will feature a combination of open road tolling lanes for E-ZPass customers and a gated exit system for non-E-ZPass customers who prefer to pay by cash or credit card.

March 21, 2024 Press Release from the U.S. Department of Justice: CLEVELAND – Rebecca C. Lutzko, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio announced that a federal grand jury sitting in Cleveland returned a five count indictment charging Devin Sims, Michael Williams, and Teontaey Thomas with aiding and abetting each other in Robbery of Mail or Property of the United States and Stealing Keys Adopted by the Post Office. Two of the men, Sims and Williams, are also charged with Brandishing a Firearm During a Crime of Violence and Theft of Mail. Sims alone is charged with Possession of Stolen Mail.

In-person voting begins tomorrow morning for the March 19th election. There are many contested races starting at the federal level, all the way down to the county level in west central Ohio. There are issues on the ballot, including new money requests from Bath and Pusheta Townships and a few school districts are going for renewal levies. If you are looking to vote absentee, you better act quickly.

Taxes are due February 9th and people can pay them at the treasurer's office in the courthouse between 8:30 a.m. and 430 p.m. on Thursday or Friday. Or people can put their payment in a drop box in an alley off Hickory Street. If you are mailing your check, it needs to be postmarked by February 9th for it not to be considered late.

The Lima Salvation Army was able to assist 583 families which included just over 2,000 children 12 years of age and younger this past Christmas. But their mission goes way beyond the holidays. In 2023 the Salvation Army served just over 18,000 individuals with their programming which includes assistance with rent, utilities, meals, after-school programs, and summer camps.
