The Lima Rotary Club learned that the Lima Public Library is about more than just books. A representative from the library spoke at Monday's meeting about all the different services and activities the library offers to the public for free. Many people don't know that a free library card can get them access to a variety of online resources for both adults and kids. It can be used to register for services like tutoring, checking out ebooks, and even borrowing movies and TV shows digitally. In person, families can register for events like crafts and scavenger hunts to get kids excited to learn.
Books unite us - censorship divides us. That's the focus in public libraries across the nation. This week marks the American Library Association's annual Banned Books Week. The Lima Public Library is participating with a display of books. The library's executive director says he has not had a challenge of a book in the 11 years that he has been at the library. Nationally the American Library Association says there has been a rise in book challenges mostly on the school level.
Kids are getting a chance to improve their acting skills at the Lima Public Library. Students in fourth grade and up took part in Mini Drama Camp, learning how to build characters, boost public speaking skills, and deal with nerves of performing. The camp is run by instructor Joanna Walt, of Creative Dramatics. She wants students to not only have fun but also improve the kids' self-confidence.
