Today is the “Great American Smokeout.” The initiative is held every year to encourage people to quit smoking. But it’s not just smoking that’s a concern; so is vaping. A recent study shows those who vape are 19% more likely to develop heart failure than those who have never done it before. “The study was looking at, with this new trend of vaping, does it actually affect the heart in such a way that it causes the heart to fail? Heart failure is an extremely dangerous condition and very prominent. So anytime that we can look for causes that are reversible, we want to look for them,” stated Dr. Nina Thakkar Rivera, Cleveland Clinic.

Ordinance 205-22, which designates city parks and outdoor recreational facilities in Lima as smoke and vape-free, went before Lima City Council Monday Evening following a second reading. During their regular Monday session, council members did not act on the ordinance and placed it for a third reading.

Tonight at Lima City Council, the city administration introduced legislation to designate city owned parks and outdoor recreational venues as tobacco free venues. According to a Lima-Allen County Community Health assessment report, mortality rates for lung and bronchus cancers are higher in Lima than the United States and The Healthy People 2030 target as well as 56% of local youth being exposed to secondhand smoke.
