It was a symbol of patriotism, community, and family on Tuesday in Putnam County as the remains of a fallen Dupont Korean War solider missing for more than 70 years finally comes home. In Ottawa, family members and community supporters lined the streets along the US Route 224 corridor to pay their respects and salute the return home for the Honorable Transfer of the Remains of Corporal Clark Worline.
A local event is being held on Saturday, December 17 in Ottawa at the Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery located at 867 West Main Street. The ceremony begins at noon with wreath-laying following a short talk, a 21-gun salute, and TAPS. Names of veterans buried at the cemetery will be read while family, friends, and community place wreaths at more than 421 gravesites. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate in this special event.
The Ohio National Guard left Saint Marys in 2020 to join forces with Lima. But it was hard to forget all the guardsmen and women that have been a part of the community since 1877. That is why John Burd came up with the idea to build a memorial to their local Ohio National guard across the street from the armory where they served. He is thrilled about how it turned out.
On Veterans Day at 11 a.m., on the corner of Chestnut and Spring Streets, there will be a ceremony to dedicate the new monument. The Ohio National Guard left Saint Marys in 2020, and a resident came up with the idea to create a monument for the citizen soldiers who were there. City administrators liked the idea and they decided to build it in Memorial Park facing the old armory used by the guardsmen.
Representatives for the Children's Hunger Alliance spoke at the Veterans Memorial Civic Center about what they have been working on in the fight against food insecurity, and what they will be doing going forward. The Children's Hunger Alliance took time to thank their partners such as Soldiers of Honor, who run an afterschool and summer youth boxing program, and help them distribute food to children in need. Though they help countless families every year, in recent years both families in need and the organizations that support them are finding themselves going through more financial strain.
Fresh N Faded holding their 4th annual Back to School event Sunday Afternoon. Students of all ages were able to pick up school supplies to help get them started this fall, plus some new shoes for school. Besides the giveaway,, soldiers of honor was putting on a boxing demonstration, there was cheerleading competition, and free face painting and haircuts. The Owners of Fresh and Fades say that holding this event is special to them, because they can chip in and help those in Lima.
