A poll from the University of Michigan finds that more than half of older adults have cut back on everyday expenses in the last year, and nearly 1/5 said they have had trouble in the past year paying for health-related costs. Older adults who said they’re in fair or poor physical or mental health were around twice as likely to say they have slashed their health-related spending. The physician who leads the national poll on healthy aging team says the findings are concerning for the wellbeing of older adults.
Ohio hands out billions of American Rescue Plan dollars and looks at addressing the lack of housing in the state. Gov. Mike DeWine signed a spending bill with nearly $6 billion in federal and state dollars to support programs like mental health services, hospitals, and school coronavirus relief. The spending bill set aside $500 million to assist Ohio’s childcare industry. It also had a controversial provision to allow county auditors the authority to set values for low-income housing projects, which could affect real estate tax collection. But DeWine says addressing low-income housing will be one of his priorities in his next two-year budget that need to be completed this summer.

Senator Rob Portman says Congress cannot continue to kick the can down the road when it comes to the budget. Last week, the U.S. House passed another bill to extend funding to March 11th and avoid another government which could happen at midnight on February 18th. This will be the third temporary spending bill to advert a shutdown since the fiscal year started on October 1st. Portman says the sooner that an appropriations bill is passed for the rest of this fiscal year, the sooner departments like the military can go ahead with new projects.
