Senate blocks amendment on transgender athletes during weekend session on voting bill

The Senate has blocked a proposal that would ban transgender athletes from playing in women’s sports. It's one of President Donald Trump’s priorities as he pressures Congress to act on a broad voting bill. Senators are holding a rare weekend session to debate the legislation that would put in place strict new requirements for voter registration and require photo IDs at the polls in an effort to prevent people in the country illegally from casting ballots. Trump wants additional priorities added to a House-passed bill, including the sports ban for transgender athletes a ban on all mail-in voting.

Voting location manager Barbara Hochstetler said, “The day has been very steady. We had people lined up. Someone here was here at six o'clock this morning, and at 6:30 we probably had a good 10 or 12 people. And throughout the day, it's been very steady this morning. So we're pleased to see the people of the township coming out to vote today.”

“Everyone will have at least two issues on their ballot,” said Morgan Bode, director of the Allen County Board of Elections. “After that, it depends what district you live in, whether you'll have anything else. There is a countywide issue, and there’s also State Issue 2.”

Reminder: Petition Deadline is February 5th for May Primary

The Allen County Board of Elections wants to remind people of the petition deadline for the May primary. With it being an off-year election, voters will be deciding who will be representing them at the county and municipal level. So anyone interested in running for those seats must get their petitions signed and submitted by Wednesday, February 5th, to be on the ballot.

Lima polling location seeing higher-than-normal turnout

According to one Allen County polling location, it's no typical Election Day. At First Baptist Church on Cable Road, there are three precincts with about 3,000 registered voters, and they are seeing a larger-than-normal turnout this morning. They saw 45 people lined up when the polls opened at 6:30 a.m. and have already surpassed the total number of voters they saw in the primary.
