SHAWNEE — Defending WBL champion Shawnee opened its season with a dominant performance, overpowering Crestview 72-46 in a matchup between two familiar coaching staffs. Entering the night, Doug Etzler and Mark Triplett had split their four previous meetings since 2021, but Shawnee seized control early and never looked back.
Late in the third quarter, Trevick Bertke found his brother Beckett for a highlight moment, as the Findlay commit hammered home a one-handed dunk to extend the Indians’ lead to 57-32. Crestview tried to chip away, with Cash Hammons recovering his own blocked shot to knock down a mid-range jumper, followed by Huxley Grose drilling a three to keep the Knights within range.
Shawnee responded immediately. Greyson McDonald attacked the lane for a strong finish, stretching the lead to 61-37. Moments later, McDonald delivered a clean backdoor pass to Sullivan Hasting for another basket as the Indians continued to pull away.
Shawnee closed out the night in full control, securing a 72-46 win.
