LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Millions of Americans are expected to travel during the Memorial Day holiday weekend despite rising gas prices, according to AAA.
AAA estimates that 45 million Americans will travel between Thursday and Monday, with 39.1 million people expected to travel by car and another 3.66 million flying during the holiday period.
Travel experts say the increase in traffic is expected to continue throughout the summer as families plan vacations and celebrations connected to America’s 250th anniversary and the anniversary of Route 66.
“When you travel in the summer, there are going to be a lot of people on the road. With the country's anniversary, Route 66 anniversary this year, there's going to be a lot of people in the national parks. Plan early, make reservations. Don't expect to just get there and find something. It is always good to have your AAA card,” said Cindy Nelson, manager of Lima AAA.
AAA is reminding drivers to slow down, move over for emergency vehicles and avoid driving impaired. Drivers are also encouraged to check batteries, tire pressure and vehicle lights before beginning holiday travel.
“We did over 350,000 road service calls last Memorial Day, for little things like flat tires and fluids, just topping off, you know, those little things are great things that you can do on your own,” Nelson added.
According to GasBuddy, the average gas price in Ohio is $4.53 per gallon, about $1.40 higher than during Memorial Day week last year.
