LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — As the 176th Allen County Fair approaches, organizers are preparing to welcome thousands of visitors while highlighting major improvements to the fairgrounds and the importance of recruiting the next generation of volunteers.
Allen County Fair Manager Troy Elwer spoke to the Lima Kiwanis Club about preparations for this year's fair, which will feature more than $1.7 million in improvements completed since 2022. He also emphasized the critical role volunteers play in making the annual event possible.
The Lima Kiwanis Club assists each year by helping Poor Jack Amusements sell ride tickets during the fair. However, Elwer said the volunteer base is changing as longtime volunteers age and fewer younger people step in to help.

Organizers hope to engagemore young people and cultivate a new generation of volunteers to ensure the fair's continued success.
"Our theme for this year is growing the future of America because that's really what our mission really is at the fairgrounds. It's promoting the talented youth that we have in this community through safe, fun, and educational agricultural experiences."
In addition to agricultural exhibits, entertainment and rides, the fair will commemorate the nation's 250th birthday with activities throughout its nine-day run.
The celebration will conclude with a fireworks display on the final night of the fair. The fireworks will be launched from the infield, with the grandstand open for spectators to enjoy the show.
