LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — With the start of the school year less than a month away, Lima City Schools is reminding students and families about updates to the district's dress code.
The Lima City Schools Board of Education approved changes to the dress code at the end of the last school year after the Student Advisory Council presented a proposal to expand clothing options beyond traditional Spartan wear.
Under the updated policy, students may wear any solid-colored pants, including denim. Sport Crocs are also permitted. However, several restrictions remain in place, including prohibitions on ripped jeans, yoga pants, midriff-baring clothing, flip-flops and slippers.
District administrators believe the changes will give students more flexibility in expressing their personal style while maintaining an appropriate learning environment.
"I'm also hoping that it helps with attendance. When you're able to open up your style, your fashion, and truly let your personality shine, hopefully it makes more students want to come to school more consistently and really be comfortable when they're here," said superintendent Andre Rudolph.
Rudolph goes on to say the district hopes the updated dress code will help students feel more comfortable and engaged in school.
The first day of classes for Lima City Schools is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 19.
The district will also host its annual Back-to-School Celebration on Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park.
