LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Dozens of community members gathered Tuesday morning at Lima Senior High School to recognize the importance of protecting children across Allen County and to mark the beginning of Child Abuse Prevention Month.
The annual Allen County Children Services memorial flag-raising ceremony was held at the school this year, highlighting the critical role educational institutions play in supporting the well-being of children.
According to Allen County Children Services, the agency investigated more than 700 cases of abuse and neglect in 2025, a number that has remained relatively consistent over the past several years.
Sarah Newland, executive director of Allen County Children Services, emphasized the vital role schools play in both reporting and preventing abuse.
“Schools are actually one of our number one reporters of abuse and neglect in the community. But not only do they report abuse and neglect, they do so much to prevent abuse and neglect every day with working with families and children,” said Newland.
Allen County commissioners and Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith also attended the event, presenting proclamations in support of Child Abuse Prevention Month. Officials encouraged community members to remain vigilant and report any suspected abuse or neglect.
Suspected cases can be reported by calling 419-227-8590.
