LIMA, Ohio (AP) — Students at Apollo Career Center are once again gaining hands-on experience while giving back to the community.
The school’s Welding and Fabrication program and Electrical Systems Technology program each received $1,000 from the Allen County Agriculture Society for their work designing and constructing multiple holiday light displays for the Mercy Health Bright Nights at the Allen County Fairgrounds.
The students said they enjoyed creating displays that were seen and appreciated by many members of the community.
Kemper Settlage, a junior at Apollo Career Center, said, “I thought it was really cool. It was a good community project for our whole lab. We worked together, obviously, and we got it done and I think it looked great.”
Troy Elwer, operations manager for the Allen County Fair, praised the students’ work. “The kids in the welding and electrical programs are extremely talented individuals, and anyone that took the time to come through Mercy Health Bright Nights this year, it was easy to tell which displays those Apollo kids brought to the table,” Elwer said.
School officials hope that the students will be able to build additional displays for this year’s Mercy Health Bright Nights event, continuing a tradition of hands-on learning and community service.
